Chapter 14
Big Red

Chinese New Year had kept us from getting the Chinese food we’d had a hankering for the previous day, but now we were ready for some dim sum. We found a place with good Yelp! reviews, and it was truly delicious—not to mention dirt cheap!

Our plan for the day involved catching an Uber across town, so we went over to Washington Square Park to request one.

Once we were in the car, we asked to be taken to the Oakland side of the Golden Gate Bridge so that we could walk across it back into San Francisco.

The ride was fairly cheap and very quick, and we got off in this park with an incredible view.

Honestly, I would recommend that anyone interested in the Golden Gate make sure that they get to see it from this viewpoint, because the San Francisco skyline is really beautiful.

One of our plans for today had been to try to visit Alcatraz, but we realized it was just going to be too much to try to cram in. Still, at least we could sort of see it from across the water.

We liked that we were staying in Telegraph Hill because the Coit Tower always showed us where our “home” was.

After hanging out for a little while longer, we started to follow the signs toward the pedestrian walkway back across the bridge.

The walk isn’t super long (just under 2 miles), but it does take a little while. It was a little windy, but the weather in general was really nice.

Once we really got out onto the bridge, I stopped being quite as much of a fan. I’m usually good with heights, but I don’t like being too close to ledges when I’m too high up. Let’s just say that I stayed toward the street side of the walkway as much as possible until we were back above ground rather than water.

Still, even if the experience wasn’t without its drawbacks, I’m really glad we made it all the way across. It’s something I feel like you have to do in SF at some point in your life.

Someone offered to take our picture once we were back on solid ground in the city.

There was still lots of signage up about the 75th anniversary that had just passed two years before we visited. It’s really hard to believe that the bridge is that old!

Since we’d nixed Alcatraz for this trip (I still really want to go sometime!), we had just enough time for one more big excursion on the day. And we chose an option that harkened back to both of our childhoods.
